January 2011 Eagle Watching

Members of Sprig and Twig Garden Club gathered for an educational tour about the Bald Eagle. We met at 9:30 on Sat. January 29th at the Church of the Master parking lot. We drove to the Eagle Viewing area in West Alton MO. where we watched for eagles in flight or rousting in the nearby trees.

Then on to the Visitor Center in Alton IL. where we were able to see a live eagle up close and personal. Our next sight was only from the road but we could clearly see a fairly good sized eagle's nest.

The last stop was at the National Great Rivers Museum. We were able to steer a barge and try to get through the locks (mostly hitting the sides of the dam), view animals you might see on the bluffs in this area, learn the different fish that inhabit our great river and much more. Of course most of us had to visit the gift shop before leaving for home.

Thank You President Linda Boelhauf for arranging this great tour.

Fig Farm Tour in Dittmer, Mo. July 12, 2010
Fig F

Jeanne Davis  joined Master Gardeners, Boone Country Garden Club (MCD) and Fleur de Lis Garden
Society (MCD) members and guests to tour the fig farm of Ivan Stoilov in Dittmer, Mo.
Ivan is a bio-chemist who studied at Stanford University in California and came to Missouri in 1995.  He bought 10 acres in Dittmer and constructed a solar powered greenhouse.  He has also created a geothermal powered greenhouse.  Both are 30' X 96'.  The geothermal greenhouse is powered by flush oil he recycles from a company that makes vitamins.  Between the rows of fig trees in the greenhouses he also grows an heirloom Bulgarian tomato, Beefheart, that he harvests in Feb. & March, lettuce in the winter and other cool season crops.

Fresh figs taste like a cross between a honeydew mellon and a peach.  The whole fruit is edible and sweet.

He sells his figs and other vegetables at the Farmer's Market in Tower Grove Park, the Schlafly Bottle Works in Maplewood and near the Children's Hospital on Thursday mornings.
